BAY RIDGE — THE FIRST BRAND NEW HIGH SCHOOL constructed in Bay Ridge in nearly a century is set to be erected at 445 Ovington Avenue between 4th and 5th avenues, near the Bay Ridge Avenue subway station, according to New York YIMBY. The city’s School Construction Authority, listed as the owner of the site, recently filed permits to begin construction, although no end date was given. The currently vacant lot was previously owned by the shuttered St. Nicholas Home. Plans call for 35,373 square feet of facility space.

Community Board 10, which represents the area, voted against the proposal last year, claiming that the construction of the school in the area would be disruptive, as the one-way street it will be located on is densely populated. In proximity to the planned high school building are other existing educational buildings: P.S./I.S. 30, as well as Lutheran Elementary across the street.

High schools in the area are overcrowded to the brim, and the news of a new school building is welcomed by many local families, according to the Brooklyn Paper.
