ALBANY — GOV. KATHY HOCHUL said the time has come to abolish the Electoral College, announcing her support for a Constitutional amendment for a national popular vote for president. She made this announcement at the 60th general proceedings of the New York State Electoral College in Albany on Tuesday. Hochul pointed out that under the Electoral College system, the votes of residents of less populated states count more than the residents of a state like New York.

“Consider that a single elector in Wyoming — no offense to Wyoming — represents 200,000 residents. And in New York, an elector … represents 700,000,” Hochul said. “This convoluted process also leads candidates for president to spend an inordinate amount of time in a few swing states, rather than appealing to the voters of our entire country.”

The Constitution has been updated in the past, Hochul said — for example, to give women and people of color the right to vote. “The founders themselves created a path to amend our Constitution, to keep it a living document.”
