Federal agency investigation finds nothing to fear about drone sightings
WASHINGTON, D.C. — NOTHING TO SEE HERE: The Department of Homeland Security, FBI, FAA and Department of Defense issued a joint statement Monday saying an in-depth investigation shows there’s nothing to fear about the recent rash of unidentified drone-sightings over the New York/New Jersey metro area. After sending in advanced detection tech and trained observers, and examining 5,000 tips generating 100 leads, the agencies concluded “that the sightings to date include a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistakenly reported as drones.”
Nothing has turned out to be “anomalous” or pose a national security or public safety risk, the agencies added. However, the feds urged Congress to enact legislation “to extend and expand existing counter-drone authorities to identify and mitigate any threat that may emerge.”
The recent drone reports include a sighting in the Brooklyn Navy Yard — which turned out to be a large but inoperable drone dragged on a sidewalk by an industrial company, Amogy Inc. Amogy CEO Seonghoon Woo said it had been placed on the sidewalk after a company party about a month ago, according to news sources including Raw Alerts, which provides a video of a police officer handling the drone.
