After UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot in New York City, the American dissatisfaction with the existing healthcare system is evident and at the forefront of national conversation. Inequality expert Sam Pizzigati argues that the response to Thompson’s death echoes the nation’s anger toward the system that allows CEOs and corporations to profit from crises.
“Among wealthier countries, Americans ‘die the youngest and experience the most avoidable deaths’ despite spending almost twice as much on health care as others, a recent Commonwealth Fund Study found,” said Pizzigati. “25% of Americans, Gallup polling adds, have people in their family who have had to delay medical treatment for a serious illness because they couldn’t afford it.”
