LOWER MANHATTAN — MAYOR ERIC ADAMS WILL NOT BE RECEIVING $4 MILLION IN PUBLIC MATCHING FUNDS for his 2025 re-election campaign, after the city’s Campaign Finance Board denied his request on Monday, the Daily News reports. The board denied the public funds on the grounds of Adams’ ongoing corruption case. The action represents a major setback for Adams as he tries to hold ground against more than six challengers in the coming year’s Democratic primary.

CFB Chair Frederick Schaffer explained during a meeting that the panel is withholding matching funds from Adams because it “has determined that there is reason to believe that the Adams campaign has engaged in conduct detrimental to the matching funds program in violation of law.” Schaffer named the mayor’s federal indictment and his failure to abide by the board’s request for documents and information.

Thus far, the only mayoral candidate whom the CFB cleared to receive the first round of matching funds Monday was Scott Stringer. The former city comptroller and former Manhattan borough president, who has been raising funds for nearly a year in preparation for the 2025 campaign, is expected to receive about $2.8 million in matching funds under the CFB’s vote.
