Study: Poor Flatbush Ave. bus service stunts local economy, gets workers fired

FLATBUSH AVENUE — A NEW SURVEY SHOWS that bus riders along Flatbush Avenue would patronize more local businesses if the buses were reliable. “Shopping, dining, or entertainment” were listed as the top destinations for the 1,800 surveyed Flatbush Avenue bus riders — and a whopping 85% of riders said they would shop or dine on the avenue more often if buses ran on time. The report from the Riders Alliance and Pratt Center for Community Development — ‘Better Buses For Flatbush Avenue’ — relied on interviews with bus riders along the corridor between Empire Boulevard and Brooklyn College.

The survey also found that 74% of Flatbush Avenue bus riders report an income lower than $80,000 annually, with 72% female; two of three bus riders have reported waiting in extreme weather for their transport; and a third have been fired, reprimanded or lost pay at work due to bus delays.
