CITYWIDE — MAYOR ERIC ADAMS ANNOUNCED on Thursday a new Charter Revision Commission which will be tasked with improving government transparency and responsiveness, particularly in addressing the city’s housing crisis. This follows the success of Adams’ “City of Yes for Housing Opportunity” proposal, expected to add 80,000 homes and invest $5 billion in infrastructure, housing and other needs over 15 years. The CRC will examine charter reforms to tackle challenges like the city’s 1.4% rental vacancy rate and will explore strategies to increase affordable housing. Richard R. Buery, Jr., CEO of Robin Hood, will serve as chair, joined by Vice Chair Sharon Greenberger, CEO of the YMCA of Greater New York, and Secretary Leila Bozorg, NYC Executive Director of Housing.

The mayor’s commission could set up another conflict with the New York City Council, City & State reports, as members have plans to introduce their own commission next year. Adams successfully set up a CRC during his first term which blocked councilmembers’ attempt to expand their authority over mayoral appointments.
