BUSHWICK – THE MTA ON Thursday announced that the Gates Avenue J and Z station in Bushwick is to receive a package of accessibility upgrades to bring the station into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. This will include the installation of two new elevators, along with the rebuilding of four staircases and the replacement of the yellow strips along the platforms. The upgrades are some of the first that will be funded by congestion pricing fees, according to the MTA. The authority plans to issue a Request for Qualifications for contractors before the end of the year, and hopes to begin construction in late 2026.

The Gates Avenue station earlier this year also got a facelift from the MTA’s “Re-New-Vation” program, including fresh paint, tiles and concrete, among other quality-of-life upgrades.
