Ex-Congressman Anthony Weiner files campaign paperwork for another City Council run
EAST VILLAGE/LOWER EAST SIDE — ANTHONY WEINER, A DISGRACED BROOKLYN CONGRESSMAN AND FORMER CITY COUNCILMEMBER, has officially registered to run again for NYC’s legislative body, a month after announcing that he was pondering a run. Weiner, who served southern Brooklyn in the Council from 1991 to 1998, would this time be running for the seat in District 2 serving the Lower East Side. After announcing in early November that he was considering a return to City Council, Weiner last week filed the paperwork formalizing his status as a candidate, the Daily News reported on Tuesday, Dec. 10. Although he said his filing with the campaign finance board should still be considered “exploratory,” he did so in order to meet a deadline with a local Democratic club for a candidates’ forum.
A Brooklyn native, Weiner resigned from the City Council upon being elected to Congress in 1998. During that time he also waged an unsuccessful mayoral campaign. After being caught in a sexting scandal, he resigned from Congress in 2011; five years later he pleaded guilty to sexually messaging a teenager and served a 21-month prison term that was completed in 2019.
