BAY RIDGE — NYC PARKS Department’s next qualifying test to become a lifeguard takes place Sunday, Dec. 15, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Fort Hamilton High School in Bay Ridge. After passing a visual and physical examination, swimmers over the age of 16 can enter the training program to qualify for a $22/hour pay rate and $1,000 returning bonus. Last year’s summer lifeguard recruitment surpassed both the totals from 2023 and 2022, and the Parks Department wants to build on that success, agency spokesperson Chris Clark told the Brooklyn Eagle.

“But we could always use more people, and the nationwide lifeguard shortage has certainly not spared NYC,” he said.

If you can’t make Sunday’s test, more will be held at indoor pools across the city until March 2025. NYC Parks is also hosting a free Swim Prep program, where candidates can get personalized training to help pass the test.
