Shell casings match gun that suspect used in insurance CEO’s death
ONE POLICE PLAZA — THE GUN THAT LAW ENFORCEMENT FOUND ON the suspect in last week’s killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson matches shell casings found at the crime scene, NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told the Associated Press and other news agencies on Wednesday, Dec. 11. Moreover, Commissioner Tisch said that lab results matched suspect Luigi Mangione’s prints to a water bottle and protein bar wrapper found near the scene of the killing. Writings from a notebook and manifesto revealed his condemnation of corporate greed and are giving clues into Mangione’s motives. The shell casings, which were found in the hours after Mangione fatally shot Thompson Dec. 4 in what police say was a targeted killing, had words written that are commonly used in claims denial parlance. As of press time on Wednesday, Dec. 11, Mangione remained jailed in Pennsylvania; and is fighting his extradition to New York, the Associated Press also reported at the time.
Thompson was fatally shot early morning on Dec. 4, in front of the hotel where he was scheduled to speak at an investors conference. Police caught up with the gunman, identified as Luigi Mangione on Monday after an alert McDonald’s customer recognized him from NYPD surveillance photos.
