Ocean Ave. pedestrian bridge construction underway
SHEEPSHEAD BAY — SHEEPSHEAD BAY’S OCEAN AVENUE PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE, built in the 1880s, is getting a $1.7 million revamp, and is on track for completion in the spring of 2025. The wood on the bridge is “shaky” and nails are coming out of the surface of the bridge, say local residents interviewed by News 12 Brooklyn. While the makeover is overdue, one college student at Kingsborough said that his walking commute is extended because of the repairs, and that his newer and longer commute is a “nuisance.”
“We love this bridge,” said Assemblymember Michael Novakhov, who represents the area. “It’s a beautiful bridge first of all, but it’s a functional bridge. It’s a lifeline, people use it to get from Sheepshead Bay to Manhattan Beach. This is a necessity for this neighborhood.” He stressed that people should not ride their bikes or mopeds on the bridge.
