Diocese of Brooklyn continues Christmas Tree lighting tradition at Grand Army Plaza
GRAND ARMY PLAZA — While several Roman Catholic parishes in Brooklyn have celebrated community Christmas tree lightings, the Diocese will hold its own official event this Friday in what has become a tradition at Grand Army Plaza. The Most Rev. Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of Brooklyn, will join DeSales Media at the Diocese of Brooklyn’s official Christmas Tree Lighting on Friday, Dec. 13, 2024, at 5 p.m., near the Dr. Alexander Skene monument at Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza. Christine Persichette, the anchor of Currents News on NET-TV, will serve as the Mistress of Ceremonies. The Diocese’s tree lighting will include remarks from Bishop Brennan, a scripture reading, a musical performance by cantors from the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph, the lighting of the Christmas tree and the blessing of the Nativity scene. The 28-foot Norway Spruce tree is decorated with more than 17,000 multi-colored LED lights to represent the diversity of the Diocese of Brooklyn.
Banners displaying prayer intentions that the students of Xaverian High School have written will be displayed on the fencing around the tree.
