New chapel dedicated at Catholic nursing facility

CONEY ISLAND — Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens on Monday, Dec. 9, held a dedication and grand opening of the new permanent chapel at Saints Joachim and Anne Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, an affiliate of the major social service agency. The new chapel makes Saints Joachim and Anne the only Catholic-sponsored Nursing and Rehabilitation facility in Brooklyn to possess a dedicated Chapel and prayer room for its residents and staff. The addition incorporates stained-glass window art and a serene, conjoining room, providing a tranquil area for prayer and reflection.
A dedication Mass was held on Dec. 9, coinciding with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The Mass honored Mary’s special connection to her parents, Saints Joachim and Anne, the facility’s namesakes. Following the Mass, a tree-lighting ceremony took place on the residence’s front lawn. Residents, family members, staff, and board and community members, then all enjoyed an Italian meal prepared by the renowned Gargiulo’s Restaurant and were treated to a musical performance during dinner by Xaverian High School’s Jazz Combo.
“This is the first time in the history of Saints Joachim and Anne that we have a permanent chapel and prayer room, whereas historically, our patients would attend mass in a multi-purpose room,” said Msgr. Alfred LoPinto, president and CEO of Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens and affiliate agencies. “Perhaps most significant is the design and placement of the new chapel directly in the lobby, which brings greater visibility to the Catholic identity of Saints Joachim and Anne.”
