EAST MIDWOOD — A DRIVER SPEEDING the wrong way along Avenue M in East Midwood, Brooklyn, died in a fiery crash after entering Kings Highway at roughly 9:46 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, police said. The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad found that an unidentified adult man was driving a 2012 Ford Focus sedan on Avenue M eastbound — against the flow of traffic — at a high rate of speed approaching the intersection of East 34 Street. The sedan continued through the intersection, striking a raised curb and becoming airborne. The Ford then entered the westbound lanes of Kings Highway and struck a 2024 Toyota Camry sedan headed westbound, operated by a 47-year-old woman.
Upon impact, the man’s Ford became engulfed in flames, which then ignited the Toyota. The woman was able to escape her car, remained on scene and was not injured, police said. The man, however, did not exit his vehicle and sustained burns throughout his body. EMS pronounced him deceased at the scene.
There were no arrests as of Saturday, and the investigation remains ongoing, police said.
