Federal agency greenlights construction of new $10B Port Authority bus terminal
MANHATTAN — THE PORT AUTHORITY OF NY AND NJ has secured the Federal Transit Administration’s approval to start construction on a $10 billion replacement of the 72-year-old Port Authority bus terminal in Midtown Manhattan, Bloomberg News Now reported Thursday. The approval follows the completion of a required environmental review. Construction will start early next year and will extend to roughly 2031. The new 2.1 million square-foot terminal will include more street-level retail and a multi-story, indoor atrium, and also involves the permanent closure of part of 41st Street between 8th and 9th avenues.
About 3.5 acres of public green space will be built over an enclosed ramp system connecting the terminal to the Lincoln Tunnel, the Brooklyn Eagle reported in August. “This design will get intercity buses off our streets, create park space and greatly improve the street level experience for the neighborhood,” Rep. Jerry Nadler said at that time.
