Family of 21-year-old killed calls on cops to release bodycam footage
CROWN HEIGHTS — THE FAMILY OF 21-YEAR-OLD CHRISTOPHER FERGUSON is calling on the NYPD to release body camera footage after police fatally shot him near Utica Avenue and Park Place on Thursday night, reports News 12. Ferguson’s mother, Yolanda Campbell, arrived at the hospital early Friday morning but had not been allowed to view the body by Saturday. The NYPD claims Ferguson was wanted for a March homicide and pointed a gun at officers following a car chase and crash, prompting the shooting. Activists, including Reverend Kevin McCall, argue the use of force was excessive, with Ferguson being struck by 17 shots. The Attorney General’s office is investigating, as is required by state law for all police-involved killings.
The Daily News reported that a police source showed the paper unreleased bodycam footage that appears to confirm the NYPD’s version of events. In the alleged video, according to the News, Ferguson is seen in the front passenger seat of a crashed Honda attempting to open its door, before leveling a gun at approaching officers, who then open fire. The video has not been released to the public; police said it would be shown to Ferguson’s family first. Police also tweeted an image of the gun they said was found at the scene, which featured an illegally extended magazine.
“I don’t care what crime that Christopher did. Seventeen shots is excessive,” said McCall to News12 New Jersey.
