Ammunition casing used in CEO’s killing bore words used in insurance parlance
MIDTOWN — AMMUNITION CASINGS THAT WERE USED in the targeted killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Wednesday bore etched words that could provide clues into the motive for the shooting, investigators found. A law enforcement official told the Associated Press that the gunman, who is still at large, had reportedly emblazoned the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose,” terms that are code in the insurance industry for justifying denial of claims, according to the Associated Press and other sources.
“From watching the video, it does seem that he’s proficient in the use of firearms as he was able to clear the malfunctions pretty quickly,” the NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told reporters.
Police have visited several hostels looking for the gunman, who reportedly wore black with a distinctively-designed grey backpack. The NYPD has released photos of a man wanted for questioning in relation to the shooting, whom law enforcement said specifically targeted Thompson. The slain CEO was walking alone, without any bodyguards, even though he had received threats, his widow told reporters on Wednesday.
