Junior football team gets boost from Junior’s
BROWNSVILLE – A BROOKLYN YOUTH football team is set to take the field at the Pop Warner Superbowl in Florida this weekend, thanks in part to a hefty donation from the owner of Junior’s Restaurant, the Fulton Mall cheesecake institution. Brownsville’s Mo Better Jaguars, who compete in the nine-year-old division and are partnered with the NYPD, are undefeated this season with a 12-0 record, with no competitors even managing to score against the team. The Jaguars’ coaches and parents have been fundraising travel and lodging expenses with a $47,000 goal, and were $19,000 away on Wednesday, according to CBS – when Junior’s owner Alan Rosen pledged $10,000 and challenged other Brooklynites to make up the gap. As of press time, individual donations had pushed the team into the endzone, meaning the Jaguars will get their chance to “Bring it home for Brooklyn,” as one young player said.
“Our hard work paid off and we reached our goal, which is making it to Florida, but the work is not done yet because we still ain’t won. We’ve got to win every game in Florida,” running back Ron Rollock, age 9, told CBS.
