CITYWIDE — ‘THIS DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE A RANDOM ACT OF VIOLENCE,” top NYPD brass told reporters at a press conference late Wednesday morning after the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny and Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey recapped the shooting and the escape of the gunman, who was seen walking from the scene, then accessing a Citibike, which he rode to Central Park. NYPD is still investigating how the gunman, wearing a distinctive gray backpack, got to the e-bike and said they are still determining a motive.

Tisch said, “At this time, there is every indication that this was a pre-meditated, pre-planned targeted attack,” and that there is no danger to the public in the busy Avenue of the Americas in Midtown. Maddrey confirmed the safety protocol in place for Wednesday night’s Rockefeller Center tree lighting, which is taking place as planned with a “massive presence” by police and aviation and canine units deployed.

Kenny said that it did not appear that Thompson and his killer had crossed paths prior to Wednesday’s shooting, and that Thompson had arrived in New York from Minnesota, where United Healthcare is headquartered, on Monday morning.
