GREENPOINT — THE CITY DEPARTMENT of Environmental Protection (DEP) on Monday announced the start of a program to upgrade more than 600,000 Automatic Meter Reading water meter devices across the city over the next three years, starting in Greenpoint. AMR devices are small gray boxes that wirelessly transmit water consumption readings from water meters to DEP.  Benefits of the new devices will include online real-time consumption monitoring, faster leak detection and consistent customer service.

The upgrades are mandatory, but DEP will perform the work at no charge. Most meters are located outside, so techs will usually not need appointments to complete the 15- to 30-minute swap job. If access to interiors is necessary, property owners may receive letters setting appointment times. Property owners are required to allow DEP staff and contractors access to meters, and are asked to look out for installation timeline notifications, keep pets inside during work periods and clear away foliage or debris around the meter points.

Techs will have DEP logos on their uniforms and will produce proper ID upon request. They will travel in DEP vehicles and will never ask for payment.
