New police chief pledges crackdown on repeat offenders
CITYWIDE – NEW NYPD HEAD Jessica Tisch in an interview with NY1 on Monday discussed crime in the city, as well as her priorities as commissioner. Tisch acknowledged the department’s turbulence, saying, “It’s not lost on me, it’s not lost on anyone that I am the fourth commissioner to take over in a pretty short amount of time. Stabilizing the department and making everyone feel like there is a very clear direction that we’re moving in […] is important.”
On the city’s crime situation, which has improved since pandemic-era spikes in 2020 and 2021 but is still higher in several key categories than in 2019, Tisch said, “The revolving door of the criminal justice system is absolutely maddening. It’s offensive. And we need to do something to shut it down. I was at briefing the other day where they told me 38 people on the New York City subway system committed 1,162 crimes on the subway system. […] We need our partner in the criminal justice system to step up and address some of those gaps.”
Tisch was appointed last month following the successive resignations of Keechant Sewell, Edward Caban and Tom Donlon, all picks of Mayor Adams. Tisch previously headed the city’s I.T. and then Sanitation departments, but prior to her appointments worked at the Police Department beginning in 2008.
