LPC will review window-replacement plan for landmarked building
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — The windows of a landmark Heights building will be replaced to prevent leaks, according to a plan by SP Wong Architect that the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission is reviewing, reports New York YIMBY. The proposal is for the historic Brooklyn Trust Company Building at 177 Montague Street and plans to replace the building’s aging windows with the dual goal of decreasing air and water leakage and improving the structure’s thermal performance. The LPC will also review the building to ensure that construction continues to meet standards. If approved, the work will result in about a 5% increase in window size. A JP Morgan Chase (retail and investment banking) branch occupies the building, and residences were created on the upper floors, which the law firm Cullen & Dykman once occupied.
The building has a long history, both as a bank building and as home of the law firm which represented the Brooklyn Bridge’s builders and whose partners included Col. Edgar M. Cullen, a retired Chief Judge of the NY Court of Appeals. An Eagle article published during the building’s centennial year (2015), reported that condos were being built on the upstairs floors of the Brooklyn Trust Company Building.
Cullen & Dykman, which (according to its website) moved to 177 Montague in 1950 — the year that the Brooklyn Trust and Manufacturers Hanover Trust merged, made its NYC home here for more than 50 years before merging with another law firm and moving.
