Local shipping company provides peace of mind against porch pirate thefts
MILL BASIN — LOCAL SHIPPING STORES ARE PROVIDING A VITAL SERVICE for Brooklynites trying to safeguard their packages from porch pirates, reports News 12 Brooklyn. An increasing number of Brooklyn residents are opting to send their packages to local stores such as Outside the Box Shipping in Mill Basin, which has received about 100 packages daily from customers who don’t want to risk leaving deliveries on their doorsteps. During a year in which the Mayor’s Office reported 90,000 packages are stolen or lost in transit daily across the city, city residents noted that surveillance cameras are not always an effective deterrent: the porch pirate simply lowers his or her head and makes off with the package. Outside the Box Shipping has offered a solution for worried residents, whereby customers can set up a mailbox where packages and mail are stored safely until their rightful recipients can pick them up at one of the store’s multiple locations, including in Midwood and Prospect Heights. The customers receive email notifications for each delivery.
One customer named Alexa said she lost $500 worth of stolen packages before switching her deliveries to Outside the Box Shipping, whose owner told News 12 Brooklyn, “You get peace of mind knowing you can come after work to get your packages and not worry that they’ll be stolen off your porch.”
