BUSHWICK — DEVELOPER RIVINGTON CO. HAS BROKEN GROUND on the restoration and conversion of the historic William Ulmer Brewery at 81 Beaver St. Led by DXA Studio architects, the project will rehabilitate the landmarked, 19th-century former brewhouse building, convert it to commercial use on the ground floor and three subterranean cellar levels and to residential use on the second, third, fourth and penthouse levels. Designed by noted German-American architect Theobald Englehardt and first completed in 1872, the structure was once the largest piece of a multi-building brewery complex, which also included an office, an engine-machine house and a stable-storage facility.

The landmarked brewhouse is one of the last remaining structures from an era in which Brooklyn was the brewing capital of the United States. The brewery closed when Prohibition was enacted, according to a deep dive into the brewery complex by the Brooklyn Eagle’s Lore Croghan.
