Floyd Bennett shelter could shutter under Trump
MARINE PARK – CITY OFFICIALS ARE worried about the uncertain future of the large migrant tent camp at Floyd Bennett Field, ahead of the incoming second Trump administration, reports the New York Times. The former airfield is part of the national parks system, and building the shelter there required a lease from the federal government, approved by President Biden; President-elect Trump may cancel this lease as part of his push against immigration – or deport residents directly from the camp. A spokesperson for U.S. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis told The City that the congresswoman has already begun discussing plans for a shutdown with colleagues.
Floyd Bennett currently houses 500 families, and costs the state $250 million a year. Insiders told the Times that the city is attempting to ensure the state will continue to pay if the migrants there are moved to other accommodations, before making a final decision on the shelter.
The camp has long been controversial on both sides of the immigration debate – supporters say that conditions are abysmal and the remote location hampers integration efforts, while opponents say the presence of the migrants has led to higher crime. The City reports that activists of all stripes have urged Adams to move the families out as soon as possible.
