Brooklyn teen to lead ‘The Nutcracker’ at Lincoln Center
BROOKLYN & MANHATTAN — A 13-YEAR-OLD BALLERINA from Red Hook is set to lead the iconic holiday show, “The Nutcracker,” at Lincoln Center starting this weekend, reports the Brooklyn Paper. Sasi Shrobe-Joseph will take on the role of Marie (usually called Clara, in other productions), the young heroine who embarks on a magical journey after receiving a wooden nutcracker as a gift, for half of the season’s performances. The teen has been dancing since she was a toddler, and studies at the School of American Ballet.
Shrobe-Joseph is of Lebanese, Black, Jewish and white descent, and her parents are proud of her status as a trailblazer for dancers from underrepresented backgrounds: “Sasi is a true symbol that we all can live with love harmoniously,” Chandrika Shrobe told the Brooklyn Paper.
The Christmas favorite ballet will run from Nov. 29 to Jan. 4 at Lincoln Center.
