St. Francis College awarded $1.2M grant for its nursing program
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — ST. FRANCIS COLLEGE’S NURSING PROGRAM has been awarded two grants from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation. The grants, which total $1,185,000, will be disbursed over the next three years to support scholarships for nursing students as well as nursing-faculty residencies at St. Francis College. As one of the largest foundations in the United States and the largest that is focused exclusively on healthcare across New York State, the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation has played a critical role over the years in supporting St. Francis College students by funding sizeable nursing-program scholarships that help offset tuition, thus eliminating financial barriers.
Over the past five years, SFC has received a total of $2,225,000 from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation in support of its nursing and health-and-wellness programs, including from this most recent round of grants that were announced on Nov. 20. The Mother Cabrini Nursing Scholarship at St. Francis College has offered financial assistance to more than 100 nursing students with a focus on those from high-achieving, low-income or historically excluded backgrounds. The foundation also supports nursing-faculty residents at St. Francis College.
The saint for whom the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation is named also has a strong Brooklyn connection. Born near Milan, Italy, she immigrated to the U.S. in 1889, at the direction of Pope Leo XIII to work with the Italian immigrants, and opened her first school in the northeast at the former Moravian church on Van Brunt Street and President Street in present-day Carroll Gardens.
