GHANA — Peak of a landfill gives bovine a thrill: Cows are seen at the largest dumpsite where textile waste ends up at Old Fadama in Accra, Ghana, Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024. Much of the waste is from fast fashion, a trend blamed on cheap labor practices. The clothes, often the result of overproduction of substandard quality, wind up soon discarded. A group of designers trying to raise awareness of this trash problem have established the Or Foundation, which is a 501(c)3 in the U.S. and a registered charity in Ghana, according to the organization’s website. The Or Foundation is working on creative alternatives toward ecological prosperity.
The designers also launched the Owo Festival, now in its third year, with the goal of showcasing upcycled fashion pieces by local designers and encouraging people to repurpose their clothes.
ROME — One of civilization’s most widely circulated images is boosted even more by technology: A journalist uses a smartphone to scan “The crucified Christ, the Virgin, and Saints Dominic and John the Baptist,” also known as “Crucifixion, Cornovi della Vecchia altarpiece,” a 1558 painting by Italian artist Tiziano Vecellio, during a press preview of the “Tiziano, Lotto, Crivelli and Guercino” exhibition at the Capitoline Museums to celebrate the start of the 2025 Jubilee, in Rome, Monday, Nov. 25, 2024.
The Capitoline Museums (Musei Capitolini) are the main civic museums of the city of Rome and are significant in that they preserve the city’s ancient history. Created in 1471 during the reign of Pope Sixtus IV, the Capitoline Museums first opened to the public in 1734. Connecting the two buildings that comprise the museums is the Galleria Lapidaria, an underground passage that crosses the Campidoglio Square.
ENGLAND — Making an appeal to — something, something almighty: Manchester United’s head coach Ruben Amorim reacts during the English Premier League soccer match between Ipswich Town and Manchester United at Portman Road stadium in Ipswich, England, Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, in large part because Manchester United employed switch plays to keep in the game. New to the team, Coach Amorim has had only a couple of days to train his key players and formulate a game plan, according to The Athletic, which provides in-depth coverage of U.S. and many international sports. The 39-year-old Lisbon-born Amorim is a football (soccer) manager who, during his playing years, won 10 major titles, including three league titles.
Portman Road, a football stadium in Ipswich, Suffolk, England, has been the home ground of Ipswich Town since 1884.
UKRAINE — Studying the aftermath of an attack — ‘let’s see where these rockets were made’: Fragments of a rocket that struck Dnipro on Nov. 21 are seen at a center for forensic analysis in an undisclosed location, Ukraine, Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024. Ukraine’s Security Service took Associated Press reporters to the site to view this new experimental ballistic missile, which struck a factory in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Thursday. The Pentagon said the fragments are from a weapon based on Russia’s RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile.
The missile is named Oreshnik — the Russian word for hazel tree.
BOLIVIA — Nature’s revenge — floods, muds and furniture recovered: Soldiers recover a piece of furniture from a home flooded by a landslide caused by heavy rains in La Paz, Bolivia, Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024. Torrential rain on Saturday following a drought meant the land was too parched to absorb water effectively. The deluge caused a river to spill its banks, dislodging mud from a southwestern La Paz neighborhood where low-slung, shoddily built dwellings dot the hillside.
About two dozen homes were wrecked, and another 40 were flooded, Juan Carlos Calvimontes, Bolivia’s deputy civil defense minister, told the Associated Press.
LOS ANGELES — Protecting the ball in a drive: UCLA forward Janiah Barker (0) drives against South Carolina forward Ashlyn Watkins during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game, Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024, in Los Angeles. UCLA, ranked at #5, scored an upset win against #1 South Carolina, snapping the Gamecocks’ 43-win streak and losing them their top ranking. The Gamecocks also had finished two straight undefeated regular seasons, reports The Athletic.
The Division I team with the longest winning streak becomes the Fighting Illini at the University of Illinois.

The home team won 37-21 against Colorado, causing some major Big 12 angst, reports The Athletic. Kansas’ running back, senior Devin Neal, put in a dominant performance at the game, racking up 287 total yards and four touchdowns.
RIO DE JANEIRO — Everything is more exotic in Rio: A performer poses for a photo during the 29th LGBTI+ Rio Pride Parade that attracted thousands of revelers along Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024. This year’s Pride Parade had a climate-related theme: sustainability. “Environmental justice will only be possible with racial and social justice, gender equality and sexual diversity,” a truck banner proclaimed. Brazil, South America’s largest nation, has suffered several climate disasters, including wildfires, drought in the Amazon rainforest, and flooding in the Rio Grand do Sul state, the Associated Press reports.
Underlying the otherwise colorful festivities, however, was a growing fear of violence against the LGBTQ+ community. At least 230 LGBTQ+ Brazilians were victims of violent deaths in 2023. And more trans people were murdered in Brazil than in any other nation.
URUGUAY — Is that an opera singer? No, it’s a victorious political candidate: Yamandu Orsi, candidate for the Broad Front (Frente Amplio), and running mate Carolina Cosse, left, celebrate their victory in the tight presidential run-off election in Montevideo, Uruguay, Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024. Orsi, Uruguay’s leftist opposition candidate, and Cosse ousted the conservative governing coalition, even after the nation on South America’s Atlantic coast is bordered by two countries with right-wing governments: Brazil and Argentina.
The center-left Orsi is a one-time mayor and history teacher whose win is a rebuke to the incumbent party in a year that has seen similar trends, including in the United States.
WISCONSIN — Simple formula for successful pass — catchable but out of reach for the other guy: San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle (85) makes a touchdown catch against Green Bay Packers safety Evan Williams (33) during the first half of an NFL football game on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024, in Green Bay, Wis. The Packers ran away with what was called a “blowout game,” winning 38-10. Their win, and the Packers’ season overall, is being credited to the shrewd signing of Xavier McKinney and Josh Jacobs, the latter of whom is returning to this team. They were teammates during their college years at Alabama.
Tight ends in football have a dual/hybrid offensive role: wide receiver and lineman. Players in tight end positions are responsible for blocking on run plays and catching the ball on pass plays. Safeties are a defensive role to block the ball carrier from getting past them.
