Lithium ion battery found in Cypress Hills fire
CYPRESS HILLS — FIREFIGHTERS DISCOVERED LITHIUM ion batteries at the scene of a fire in Cypress Hills on Saturday evening, reports ABC News. A three-story building on Fulton Street caught fire around 8:30 p.m., according to the fire department, and it took more than an hour to get the blaze under control. The fire marshal is investigating the incident to determine if the batteries were the source of the fire.
High-powered lithium ion batteries, used in e-bikes and e-scooters, have been the source of hundreds of fires throughout the city as the vehicles have proliferated in recent years. Gov. Hochul this summer signed legislation targeting at regulating batteries and e-bikes, in an attempt to reduce safety hazards, while Mayor Adams last month announced details on an unregulated battery trade-in pilot program.
