NY Attorney General opens probe on death of woman lying in Brooklyn roadway
EAST NEW YORK AND ALBANY — THE DEATH OF A WOMAN WHO WAS RUN OVER IN EAST NEW YORK on Wednesday, Nov. 20, is now the subject of an investigation by New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office. The Brooklyn Eagle reported that the victim was already lying in the roadway on Pennsylvania Ave. near Riverdale Ave. The Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation corroborates that fact and indicates that, according to a preliminary report, “an unmarked NYPD vehicle was driving on Pennsylvania Avenue, just north of the intersection with Riverdale Avenue in Brooklyn. While driving down Pennsylvania Avenue, the officer ran over a civilian who was allegedly lying in the street. The civilian was transferred to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.”
Because OSI believes that the incident involved an encounter with a member of the NYPD in Brooklyn, an investigation was opened. Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI assesses every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer, including a corrections officer, may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission.
If OSI’s assessment finds that an officer may have caused the death, a full investigation is then conducted.
