Expect overnight single-lane closures on Hamilton Ave. Bridge
GOWANUS — SINGLE LANE CLOSURES will be in effect overnights on the Hamilton Avenue Bridge over the Gowanus Canal through Dec. 27, the NYC Department of Transportation announced in its weekly newsletter. Single-lanes in both directions will be closed Monday to Friday from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. to facilitate replacing the east leaf of west seating switch and brakes. The Hamilton Avenue Bridge is a moveable bridge built with two parallel leaves, one leaf carrying the northbound roadway and the other carrying the southbound roadway. The Hamilton Bridge, which connects Smith Street and Second Avenue over the Gowanus Canal, was originally built in 1942 and underwent a complete renovation during 2008 and 2009, according to the NYC DOT website.
Traffic span enthusiasts might be interested in knowing that the Hamilton Ave. Bridge reconstruction was chronicled in a paper that the engineering firm Hardesty & Hanover, LLP presented at The Heavy Movable Structures, Inc.’s 12th Biennial Symposium in November 2008. That document described the structure as “A Rare Hanover Skewed Bascule.”
