Final opportunity to comment on proposed bike lanes in Crown Heights
CROWN HEIGHTS — THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION is proposing to build several bike lanes and make other street safety design changes, including speed bumps, in Crown Heights, and Community Board 9’s Transportation Committee is asking for feedback from residents about their changes to DOT’s current plan, which has generated some controversy. DOT’s plan, which is intended to curb speeding and drag racing, would add protected bike lanes on Kingston and Brooklyn avenues between Empire Boulevard and Winthrop Street and around the George C. Wingate campus, and standard bike lanes along Rutland and Fenimore streets from the Wingate campus to Flatbush Avenue.
Opponents have raised concerns that the bike lanes will take away parking spaces and worsen congestion, as well as about the potential dangers of bikes to children.
The deadline to submit feedback is Dec. 1. DOT’s original plan, CB9’s proposed changes to it, and a feedback form can be found at CB9’s website in the “news” section.
