CITY HALL — THE NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL’S Finance Committee has scheduled a hearing for Thursday, Nov. 21 at 10:30 a.m. on a bill which would create a specific 311 category for complaints related to unlicensed cannabis retailers. The bill would also require more transparency from law enforcement about business shutdowns. Lead sponsor Gale Brewer (D-Upper West Side) has been joined by numerous Brooklyn co-sponsors, including Shahana Hanif (D-Park Slope, Gowanus), Susan Zhuang (D-Sunset Park East, Dyker Heights) and Justin Brannan (D-Bay Ridge, Coney Island).

A recent court ruling may allow a number of the shuttered cannabis shops to reopen, however. In late October, a Queens judge ruled that the law that let the NYC Sheriff quickly shut down more than 1,000 unlicensed cannabis businesses was unconstitutional because it denied shop owners their right to due process, Gothamist reported.
