Almost a quarter of NYPD cops surveyed are planning to leave the force
CITYWIDE — A RECENT SURVEY by two CUNY professors found 22.8% of the 1,823 NYPD cops who responded are “actively” planning either to leave the force for another law enforcement agency or to quit policing altogether, according to The Chief, a publication focusing on the municipal workforce. Overwork and work-life balance were the top reasons given by cops for their dissatisfaction, with more than 44% citing these grievances. Surprisingly, pay (cited by 28.4%) and retirement benefits (19%), were not the main complaints. Police overtime has spiked in recent years, noted the study’s authors, Kenneth M. Quick of DeSales University and Kevin T. Wolff of John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
Quick, a retired NYPD officer, said his former colleagues told him they feel overworked. “It’s to a point where everybody is basically getting forced to work more than they want,” he told The Chief.
