Public Comment period ends Nov. 24 for Avant Gardner Brownfield site cleanup plan
WILLIAMSBURG — THE PUBLIC HAS A FEW MORE DAYS TO COMMENT on a Brownfield contamination site at a building that was once a factory and now houses an entertainment venue, the State Department of Environmental Conservation reminded New Yorkers in its Nov. 20 Bulletin. Sunday, Nov. 24 is the deadline for submitting comments on a proposed remedy for the Avant Gardner site, at 140 Stewart Ave. and 111 Gardner Ave., that the DEC is reviewing with the NYS Dept. of Health. The DEC defines a brownfield site as “any real property where a contaminant is present at levels exceeding the soil cleanup objectives or other health-based or environmental standards, criteria or guidance adopted by NYSDEC that are applicable based on the reasonably anticipated use of the property, in accordance with applicable regulations.” The primary contaminants of concern at this site are a chlorinated volatile organic compound and historic fill related impacts which are present site-wide in soil, groundwater and soil vapor. The Draft Remedial Work Plan involves excavation and off-site disposal of soil that exceeds safety standards; implementation of chemical remediation on site; collecting samples to evaluate if the cleanup was effective; bringing in clean material that meets standards; and maintaining a site cover system to protect against any remaining soil contamination. Comments can be submitted to Project Manager Mandy Yau by calling (718) 482-7778 or emailing [email protected].
The documents regarding this site are available at the Bushwick Public Library and the Brooklyn Community Board 1 office.
