Police investigate death at The Schermerhorn in Boerum Hill
BOERUM HILL — POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING the death of a 58-year-old man found unconscious and unresponsive with trauma to the head, lying on the floor inside of an apartment at The Schermerhorn, an 11-story low-income and arts-oriented residence at 160 Schermerhorn St. between Smith and Hoyt streets in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. Police said they responded to a 911 call on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at roughly 3:44 p.m., and EMS pronounced the man deceased at the scene. There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing. The identity of the deceased is pending family notification.
The Schermerhorn is affiliated with the nonprofit Breaking Ground, and offers more than 100 units and services for formerly homeless individuals with special needs. The remaining apartments house low-income community residents, the majority of whom work in the performing arts, such as local actors, dancers, singers and filmmakers.
