Adams appoints tech-minded Jessica Tisch as new police commissioner
CITYWIDE — MAYOR ERIC ADAMS announced on Wednesday that he has appointed Jessica Tisch as the latest commissioner of the New York City Police Department, effective Monday, Nov. 25. Tisch, a 12-year veteran of the NYPD and the current commissioner of the NYC Department of Sanitation, recently led the city’s trash containerization effort. In her past career at NYPD, she served as deputy commissioner of information technology, where she oversaw the NYPD’s 911 operations, equipped officers with smartphones and updated NYPD’s CompStat data operations.
In a release, Adams lauded her as “one of the most successful managers in our administration.” Tisch said she would continue to place a strong emphasis on utilizing technology in policing, and would carry out Adams’ vision “to build the most nimble municipal counterterrorism apparatus in the world and [implement] the most forward-thinking law enforcement training and technology.”
Tisch will be Adams’ fourth police commissioner, taking over from Thomas Donlon. Donlon was appointed in September after a series of controversies and scandals but soon became the target of an FBI raid himself.
The Legal Aid Society said in a statement they were hopeful that Tisch’s appointment would bring change to the NYPD, blaming the Adams administration for attempting to “systematically dismantle the mechanisms that hold police who commit misconduct to account.” The organization noted, however, that Tisch, in her previous post, was “a driving force behind the NYPD’s increase in the use of surveillance technology, a practice that must be curtailed and subject to more robust oversight.”
