BATH BEACH AND GRAVESEND — VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR A COMMUNITY CLEANUP event that Assemblymember William Colton (D-47) is sponsoring this weekend. Colton, who has organized neighborhood cleanups for more than a decade, is focusing the efforts this time along 86th Street, from 16th to 25th avenues. The cleanup runs on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and is organized in conjunction with the Chinese American Social Services Center.

“Getting involved in neighborhood beautification is one of the most rewarding things that those who live and work in the community can do,” said Colton. “A few hours of sweeping and bagging leaves and trash can have such a tremendous impact, both aesthetically and practically — it helps businesses thrive, residents’ quality of life is enhanced, and corner catch basins are less likely to back up when it rains. When we do cleanups, there’s so much camaraderie, and we all realize afresh how important it is to participate in maintaining the kind of neighborhood we want to see.”

Constituents are encouraged to call Colton’s office at 718-236-1598 to volunteer or get more information. He added that the more people involved, the more extensive the cleanup can be.
