BENSONHURST – CITY COUNCILMEMBER SUSAN Zhuang has established a legal defense trust, reports the New York Post, a fundraising structure which allows constituents and other donors to contribute money for legal fees, separately from ordinary campaign fundraising. Zhuang’s trust appears to be connected to a July incident in which Zhuang allegedly bit a police officer during a protest outside a proposed Bensonhurst homeless shelter that has attracted significant local opposition. Zhuang has said the alleged bite occurred in defense of another protester, while the officer has said it was unprovoked. At another recent protest at the same location, a Post reporter observed dozens of community members contributing to the fund.

Zhuang is only the second NYC politician to establish a defense fund, following that of Mayor Adams, which was set up last year ahead of the mayor’s bribery charges and which had raised $700,000 by January.
