MYANMAR — Keeping the flames of faith burning: Buddhist devotees light candles during the full moon day of Tazaungmone, also known as the Festival of Lights, at a pagoda Friday, Nov. 15, 2024, in Yangon, Myanmar. This public holiday in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma in southeast Asia) takes place on the full moon day of Tazaungmone, the eighth month in the Burmese calendar (November in the Western calendar). The full moon of Tazaungmone also marks the end of Myanmar’s rainy season and the conclusion of the Kathina festival, during which monks are offered alms, including new robes. Across Myanmar, hot-air balloons are lit with candles and released into the night sky to drive away evil spirits and provide an offering to divine beings.
The number nine is an auspicious number in Myanmar. As part of the festival, 9,999 candles are lit up as offerings to Buddha in the Chaukhtatgyi Paya Pagoda on the night of the full moon day of Tazaungmone.

The Asian section of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification will serve as qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup for national teams of the Asian Football Confederation. The first two of five rounds in the qualification process will also be the qualifiers for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.

Lebanon’s prime minister reportedly urged Iran to convince the Hezbollah militant group to agree to a cease-fire deal with Israel, which could require them to pull back from the Israel-Lebanon border. However, Israeli strikes continued during this time.

Situated on the Mediterranean Sea to the north of the Bay of Haifa, Acre was under Ottoman Empire rule for four centuries until 1918, when it was incorporated into British Mandate Palestine.
