Hochul confirms congestion pricing will come
CITYWIDE – GOVERNOR HOCHUL IS set to announce on Thursday that lower Manhattan’s delayed congestion pricing plan will finally be implemented following its last-minute pause in June, with a lower price tag than initially proposed. NY1 reports that a spokesperson for Hochul on Wednesday confirmed that the toll to enter the central business district will be set at $9, instead of $15, as planned. The governor on Friday reportedly reached out to the Biden administration about funding for the reinstatement, ahead of likely budget cuts in the incoming Trump administration.
The announcement comes following several Democratic victories in last week’s elections. Observers had questioned whether the June poll was based on political concerns, after polling showed strong disapproval of the congestion pricing plan in key demographics that could have impacted down-ballot candidates; the governor denied this at the time.
“Governor Hochul paused congestion pricing because a daily $15 toll was too much for hard-working New Yorkers in this economic climate. Tomorrow, the Governor will announce the path forward to fund mass transit, unclog our streets and improve public health by reducing air pollution,” spokesperson Avi Small stated.
