BRIC receives $40K Digital Education Grant from Spectrum
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN/BOROUGHWIDE — SPECTRUM, A LEADING BROADBAND CONNECTIVITY AND CABLE PROVIDER, AWARDED A $40,000 Spectrum Digital Education grant to Brooklyn Information and Culture (BRIC) for its Digital Equity Initiative. Funds benefit the arts and media organization’s Digital Literacy Curriculum for residents in New York City Housing Authority sites throughout Brooklyn. BRIC’s Digital Equity Initiative features weekly workshops for seniors, young adults and teens, and builds on the success of long-running adult media education offerings. Specific learning modules target seniors with themes like protecting privacy and personal information, identifying trusted media sources and recognizing misinformation. Additional modules are geared toward multigenerational audiences and target workforce development skills such as podcasting and nonfiction filmmaking, how to create a budget and protect intellectual property. BRIC’s mission to build Brooklyn’s creative future incorporates some top organizational priorities, among them bridging the digital divide, building multigenerational digital citizenry and fostering culture that reflects the community that BRIC serves. A celebration for the launch of the program with University Settlement took place yesterday at the Atlantic Terminal Cornerstone Community Center in Downtown Brooklyn.
Spectrum recently announced it surpassed a $10 million milestone and awarded $1.3 million in grants to 66 nonprofit organizations for its 2024 Spectrum Digital Education program. Spectrum Digital Education supports technology programs, education and training in unserved and underserved communities throughout the company’s service area.
