CITYWIDE – FOLLOWING AN unprecedented number of brush fires in October and November, FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker on Wednesday urged New Yorkers to beware of the threat of brush fires and remain vigilant about preventative measures. In the two-week period from Oct. 29 to Nov. 12, the FDNY responded to 229 brush fires, compared to 200 in the previous three Octobers combined. 51 of the brush fires were in Brooklyn, including a blaze in Prospect Park this weekend.

Grilling has been banned in city parks while the city is under drought conditions. The department also shared safety tips, including avoiding lighting fires or smoking outdoors, taking precautions doing work near dry vegetation, staying on park trails, and clearing dried leaves and other debris.

“Due to a significant lack of rainfall, the threat of fast spreading brush fires fueled by dry vegetation and windy conditions pose a real threat to our members and our city,” Tucker wrote in a press statement.
