Mayor announces fire prevention measures after brush fires
CITYWIDE — MAYOR ERIC ADAMS HAS ANNOUNCED A FIRE PREVENTION POLICY after blazes burned a woodland area in Prospect Park, a section of Marine Park and other parts of New York State and New Jersey in the midst of an historic drought in the area. The measures aim to mitigate the drought’s increased fire risk, both in New York City and in the upstate counties that have the city’s water reservoirs. Effective Saturday, grilling is banned in city parks while the city remains in drought conditions, while smoking and other sources of open flame remain illegal throughout the parks system.
Some of these measures are re-articulating existing city laws: Fireworks remain illegal across the city. Moreover, workers engaged in hot construction activities, such as welding, must now take extra safety precautions. And New Yorkers are urged to set out yard waste on their respective recycling days to prevent disaster, as fallen and bundled leaves can be a fire accelerant.
The NYC Emergency Management Dept. measured smoke levels on Saturday night as having reached the extreme level of over 201.
