SAN FRANCISCO – SAN FRANCISCO HAS ousted its mayor, London Breed, for a political outsider after Breed conceded on Thursday, in a shift that many saw as a rejection of progressive policies in favor of moderation, reports Time, part of a move towards conservatism that swept the country, including Brooklyn, and propelled Republicans into power. The new mayor, Daniel Lurie, is a staunch Democrat, but campaigned on an anti-crime and anti-homelessness platform that criticized Mayor Breed for not acting swiftly against quality-of-life concerns that proliferated during the pandemic, such as homeless encampments and car theft. Lurie has no political experience, but is a longtime local philanthropist; while opponents criticized his use of his wealth to propel his campaign, some supporters said they believed that that wealth makes him less corruptible.

Lurie is the first cousin, once removed, of brownstone Brooklyn Rep. Dan Goldman, who easily won reelection on Tuesday; Lurie’s stepfather and Goldman’s grandmother were siblings. Both are heirs to the extensive Levi Strauss fortune.
