GOVERNORS ISLAND – ON THURSDAY, MAYOR Eric Adams broke ground on a major expansion of the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School on Governors Island, joined by School Construction Authority head Nina Kubota, Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos, and Trust for Governors Island head Clare Newman. The expansion will allow the school to better prepare young New Yorkers for green jobs by adding one new-built and one historic renovated school building, new classrooms, and labs for the school’s maritime and environmental career-training curriculum, along with a competition-sized pool and gym. The full expansion will add 445 more seats to the school.
The Harbor School provides a college prep education built upon the city’s maritime experience, with a focus on environmental stewardship. With its partners — including the Billion Oyster Project — the school develops activities for its students on, about and related to the water that create a sense of responsibility to New York Harbor in a new generation of maritime advocates.
The expansion is supported by funding from the City Council and the Manhattan Borough President’s Office.
