The last of the marathoners came through Clinton Hill just after 2:00 pm. Here, remaining spectators created a phalanx of hands for a woman to high-five as she passed in front of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Photo by Beth Eisgrau-Heller

As a photographer the choice to almost exclusively cover Brooklyn-based community, family, arts and cultural events has been a conscious one. Collectively my work represents joy, empathy, inclusion and depicts neighborhood character. I firmly believe we are better together, stronger when we lead with love rather than hate. I am proud to live in a state and a city that is inclusive of individuals from all walks of life. I am even prouder to call myself a Brooklynite.
The NYC Marathon epitomizes these ideals. On Sunday, Nov. 3, over 51,000 runners from 148 countries completed the 48th annual race. And, as if to bless the event, Mother Nature could not have provided more perfect weather. Tens of thousands of spectators turned out in every borough and every neighborhood to cheer on loved ones and strangers alike.
It is impossible for one photographer to document all 26.2 miles of the route. This photo essay is a “slice of life” from mile marker eight which encompasses Lafayette Avenue between Flatbush Avenue and St. James Place. If you need a landmark, that’s from The Brooklyn Academy of Music to Emmanuel Baptist Church.
