Learn the backstory of local co-named streets at NYC’s ‘DORIS’ map portal
CITYWIDE — NYC’S NEW HONORARY STREET NAMES MAP allows people interested in local history to find names, history and biographical information for streets that have been co-named by the City Council. The DORIS map, developed by the Department of Records and Information Services and based on City Council data, is designed as both an informative tool and a historical record. Users can enter the honoree’s name or keywords, click on locations marked on the map, or use the zip code to find all co-named streets in that area.
There are about 278 co-named streets listed in Brooklyn, all with their backstories — such as District Attorney Kenneth P. Thompson Way in Downtown Brooklyn; Mary Sansone Way in Carroll Gardens; Father Paul Schneirla Way in Bay Ridge; and Elsie Richardson Way in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
