Fire in NYPD auto pound damages 22 vehicles
RED HOOK – A WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON fire at the NYPD’s Erie Basin Auto Pound storage facility in Red Hook damaged 22 vehicles, reports the New York Post; more than 100 firefighters, as well as a fire boat, responded to the blaze, which began around 12:47 p.m., bringing the fire under control within two hours. Police said that no injuries were reported and that no evidence had been destroyed in the flames, but that the cause of the incident was being investigated.
Another fire at the Erie Pound in December of 2022 left eight injured and destroyed decades of evidence. An investigation eventually concluded that the cause of that fire was an electrical fault in the conduit of an exit sign in the building.
